How to Operate a Jet Ski: A Beginner’s Guide
Whether you’re a first-time rider or just need a quick refresher, this guide will walk you through the essential things to know before hitting the water in your South Lake Tahoe Jetski Rental! Jet skiing is a blast — and it’s even better when you feel confident and in control. Here’s what you need to know:

The Basics: Getting Familiar with the Jet Ski
Handlebars: Just like a bicycle, but remember: jet skis steer with throttle power, not just turning the handlebars.
Start Button: Most jet skis start with a key or a safety lanyard you clip to your life jacket. If you fall off, it automatically shuts off the engine.
Throttle Lever: Located on the right handlebar. Squeeze it gently to accelerate.
YOU NEED THROTTLE TO STEER!
Throttle = Control
One of the most important things to remember:
👉 You need to use the throttle to steer.
Unlike traditional boats and cars; jet skis use water propulsion to turn. If you release the throttle completely, you won’t be able to steer — even if you’re turning the handlebars. Always use throttle and apply gas when maneuvering.
Keep a Safe Distance
Jet skis are fast and nimble, but that doesn’t mean you should weave through traffic like you’re in an action movie. Always:
Yield to larger vessels — they can’t stop or turn as quickly as you can.
Stay at least 100 feet away from other boats, swimmers, docks, and the shoreline.
Never jump another boat’s wake — it’s dangerous and often illegal.

DO NOT ENTER SHALLOW WATER WITH THE ENGINE ON
AS SHOWN IN THE DIAGRAM ABOVE, SAND, ROCKS, AND OTHER DEBRIS WILL BE SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE PROPULSION CAUSING FAILURE.
Watch for No-Wake Zones
No-wake zones are areas where you must go slow enough to create no significant waves. These zones are usually marked with buoys or signs and are common near marinas, docks, and swimming areas. Ignoring them can result in fines — and worse, can be dangerous for others.
An automotive parts manufacturer faced issues with production delays, high inventory costs, and frequent machine downtimes. The existing scheduling system was manual and could not keep up with the dynamic production environment.
Re-boarding After a Fall
Falling off happens! Don’t worry — jet skis are built with this in mind.
If you flip the ski, look for a label on the back that shows which direction to roll it upright.
Always reboard from the rear of the jet ski, never the sides.
Use the footholds or handle (if available) to pull yourself up.
